Guiding Questions:
  • What do you need to know about set design in order to create a set?
  • What do you need to understand about set design in order to create a set?
  • What should you be able to do in order to create a set?

Remember! You are a Set Designer:
  • Create a clear statement of a design concept in harmony with the director’s concept. This is your Design Brief that explains what you wish to create on your stage.
  • Research time period and visual references. If you will need furniture in your set, you need to know what style was common in the time period.
  • Create statements detailing how set design elements will help in the revelation of physical, psychological, emotional and environmental world of the play and the characters in it. This will be your Design Specification which will also include specific details about what materials your set/scenery will be made. Discuss the role of set props in this play.
  • Create a ground/floor play of your set based on the above information. Use basic shapes (squares, rectangles, circle) for set props and label everything. Be sure to include entrances, exits, windows, doors etc. It should be a scaled drawing. No color necessary.
  • Now, create a perspective (elevation) drawing which is a detailed representation of your floor plan. Be sure to include an explanation for why your chose the styles and colors of your design. This must be colored. You may use Google Sketchup instead of drawing it.
  • Be prepared, with your team, to present your ideas to the class.
